I am participating today insh Allah in the blog Action Day 08 and this year’s topic is poverty. I won’t speak about Poverty in the world and leave my country. No one can deny that the Poverty rates in Egypt are increasing fearfully in the last five years despite the promising increase number of the GDP. No one can deny that the economic policies of the Government or rather the regime didn’t distribute the wealth as it should be on the contrary now there is a minority high Class getting richer and richer where as the majority of middle and low classes are getting poorer and poorer. The middle Class which was the main class in Egypt in 1960s and 1970s are diminishing day after day .The number of people who live under the poverty line are increasing fearful rate and the regime doesn’t care despite it fears from a hunger revolution,it happened several times before in the Egyptian history and it could happens again.
This Ramadan 2008 for the first time we find in the TV several commercials about helping the poor in Egypt more than their usual quantity in time of the charity month. Now the blessed government whose economic decisions and corruption led to the increase of poor is calling the businessmen and the people to donate to their fellow citizens.
Poverty in Egypt is still a big challenge since the time of the monarchy and till now with the change of regimes and faces. Poverty isn’t decreasing but increasing especially with the increase of the birth rates in Egypt. It is close circle Poverty to illness to ignorance.
I think Egypt is a rich country but its wealth isn’t for its people but for its rulers and this is since the Pharaohs who owned all the land. I believe if there is a real democratic political system in Egypt with a transparency and accountability that gives the people the upper hand through fair elections , Poverty in Egypt can reduced dramatically for sure. In 2 days we have lost L.E 150 Billion in the stock Market, I don’t know how many people will benefit from L.E 1 Billion only. Hisham Talaat Mustafa spent millions of dollars on Suzanne Tamim whose fortune after her murder reached L.E 250 Million , how many houses, schools and hospitals would have been built with that money.
Here are photos from Journalist Mohamed Ali El-Eddin from the Shanty town at Manshiyat Nasser whom we suddenly remember after the rockslide at Doweiqa
As a Muslim helping the poor is from the basis of our belief and pillars of Islam and I think in our Muslim countries our lives will be different if we pay attention to Zakat as it should as the other pillars. If the people in the Gulf pay the Zakat “and some of them do it” to the poor African countries like Niger and Somalia not to mention to Darfur things would be different for sure ,instead of spending trillions on building useless cities that could be seen from the moon. I know that the people in the Gulf donate but not as it should.
Enough of economic and political talks ,lets go to action.
